Ouch and Grrr

I interpreted for one intense hour on Wednesday, and had a pain pill kind of day all Thursday. Won’t be doing that again for a while, unless it’s a wine tasting class and the terp “has to” sample the wares 🙂

And now for the Grrrr. Don’t read if you mind a bit of grumbling.

**Grumbling has been retracted because people have started coming forth to help a friend who just had surgery. Therefore and henceforth, the post entitled “Ouch and Grrr” shall be known simply as “Ouch”**

Fifty Shades

I’m pretty sure that Oregon invented the original “50 shades of gray” before it became a popular book – which I have not read. Let’s review the highlights of how you know you live in the NW.

1) Standard issue gray – if you cannot afford gray, one will be assigned to you

2) Light gray

3) Medium gray

4) Dark gray

5) Ueber gray

6) Off gray

7) I want to off myself gray

8) I can’t find my gray mittens kind of gray

9) Merlot for breakfast gray

10) This is not an all gray suit I’m wearing, it’s my cloaking device

11) I tripped over my gray pony because I didn’t see him kind of gray

12) Gray with a hint of arctic blast chill

13) Gray with a touch of “soaked to my marrow” moisture

14) Gray with a super-powered fog horn

15) Gray with fluffy snow-like stuff which turns ordinary people into crazy ass drivers

16) ‘Who put my zebra in a blender?’ kind of gray

17) Oh goody, it’s gray again!!

18) Does this gray make me look fat?

19) Graypes of Wrath

20) Oregon – it’s a GRAYTE state

Native Foods Greek Gyro Bowl - super yum

Native Foods Greek Gyro Bowl – super yum

A fabulous dinner, a case of kombucha, and some new running shoes that are not being held together with duct tape. Does life get ANY better than this?? (The winning lottery ticket and world peace would be pretty cool too).

I’m also so grateful to live in a house where I can play 25 minute renditions of the Irish Washer Woman on hammer dulcimer and not bother any condo or apt neighbors!!

My heart is full…

I had my first hammer dulcimer lesson yesterday since the summer of 2011, at which point I was battling chronic pain and not really understanding anything my teacher was saying. Last night I felt pretty good and I could follow the teacher and remember some parts of the tune via watching and listening. HOORAH.

Today, I got to immerse myself in the glorious land of DB tactile ASL and reconnect with some dear friends. As soon as the workshop started, I was absolutely overcome with tears of joy.

My heart is full, my tears are dry, the possibilities are endless. Music in Portland, DB terping in Seattle, terping in Hawaii, move back to the south???? I’m ready to fully reclaim my life and get on with it but I’m going to need some Divine road signs – *really* clear ones – because I can’t be everywhere, doing all of this at once!

All That Glitters

I’m stepping way out of my comfort zone to post a picture of myself. While I realize the sparkly dress for Vegas is cool, it’s the Christmas socks that totally make the outfit, eh?

The sparkles shall be saved for another time. With 200,000 computer geeks in Vegas for CES, I decided that going casually (and meeting Elvis impersonators!!) is where it’s at. I always said you couldn’t pay me to go to Las Vegas. It’s still true – because I am paying “them” for the privilege.

Whataweek!

What a week this has been so far. Last weekend, I played flute outdoors at the Grotto in sub 25 degree temps. The first 3 hour night was do-able but the second night, with my holding *very* cold metal with bare hands and standing still, was just too painful (It’s not possible to play the flute with gloves and the fingerless ones don’t help that much. Jumping jacks while playing flute is right out).

What added to the excitement is that a family member was taken to the ER on the first night of my Grotto stint. We will be doing an emergency, pre-holiday visit soon with said anonymous sick person. Today, I had to cancel playing at the hospital because my guts were so off. I’m guessing it might be stress?! 🙂 Tomorrow, I will be playing briefly in a public performance with the key thought: sometimes “good enough” just has to be good enough. If it’s somewhat pretty and it makes one person’s day better – that would be great! I would like that.

Tomorrow is the 2nd anniversary of when Chris left us. We miss you everyday, Chris. I will be like the little drummer boy and play my best for you – because that is all I can do. If you can send some good llama energy down to the frazzled moose, I sure would appreciate that!

For you Chris.

For you Chris.

The War Zone

We frequently hear the adage, “I am writing for myself”. In this case, dear readers, it is true. The following post is not so much a public announcement as it is a making sense and order out of the chaos I have experienced in the last 4+ years.

In the past 53 months, I have experienced:

2 car accidents, 2 spinal surgeries within 6 weeks, 2 other major surgeries – one which required 9 days of around the clock Vicodin, career loss at 48, new career at 51, 2nd career loss at almost 52, the loss of many friends and a support network, countless blood draws and x-rays, steroid injections, steroid treatments which made me insanely ravenous and aggressive, 7 MRIs, 2 EKGs, came close to a full on anaphylactic shock, an EVIL painful test on my vertebral disc, an EVIL painful biopsy, vertigo, loss of balance, difficulty processing information, loss of memory, migraines, tinnitus, a 55 dB hearing loss in one ear which resolved after many weeks (a sign language interpreter who can’t hear is a really bad thing), massive narcotics, fasting and 2X bowel cleanses before surgeries, being intubated 4 times, massive chronic pain and nerve tingling, 1 trip to the ER and 3 cancer scares.

In that time, I have had dealings with: a sports medicine Dr, spinal specialists, a nasty neurologist, a fabulous orthopedic surgeon, 3 attorneys, countless nurses, front desk people and insurance folks who ranged from stellar to nasty, a Mt Everest of paperwork, an internist, endocrinologist, otolaryngologist, oncologist, radiologist, dermatologist, gastroenterologist, gynecological surgeon, immunologist, audiologist, a stellar physical therapist and a stellar psychologist.

I would gladly repeat all that if I could UN-DO the worst:

Having to call the police in another state to find my brother’s dead body

Spending 14 hours on the phone informing and consoling relatives around the planet

Flying 10 hours solo cross-country wanting to scream and cry but having to stifle that in public.

You would think the grand conclusion would be obvious but I finally formulated it this week. The most effective torture with prisoners is pain, fear, isolation and massive uncertainty. Obvious things, like getting one’s neck sliced open, are NOT the challenge. The grandest soul-crusher is despair; the daily grinding down through “death by a thousand flea bites”, as Pete famously says.

The grand conclusion is that I just came back from my own war zone; with all due respect to the military, my own Vietnam or Afghanistan. Methinks it’s time to throw myself a ticker tape parade! *Looking for my tiara and practicing my parade wave. Time to trade in the camouflage outfit for my LONG lost sparkly gown.*
